They called a returning missionary by the name Rev. Robert V. Dyer, Jr. to pastor the ministry. In August 1976 a small prayer group, meeting in a private home, organized the structure of the Shawnee Baptist Church. After negotiating with the Lenape School District the group was permitted to begin public worship services in Shawnee High School in January 1977. While meeting in the high school, weekly Prayer and Bible Studies met in the parsonage. Growth projections led to development of plans and the building of the sanctuary in Shamong Township that was occupied in 1979. Later structures have been added as growth and increased ministries have warranted. This ministry is designed for children in Kindergarten through sixth grade and is held on Wednesday evenings from 6:45 to 8:45 during the months of October through early May. Children involved with the Awana program will learn Bible verses and stories, play games, and sing. Special activities include Olympics, Bible quizzing, and the Grand Prix Race. A $1.00 donation for each child every week helps to cover the cost of supplies and materials.
